It is owned by Dine Brands—a company formed after IHOP's purchase of Applebee's, with 99% of the restaurants run by independent franchisees. Glendale, California, U.S. While IHOP's focus is on breakfast foods, it also offers a menu of lunch and dinner items.

IHOP went by its full name, International House of Pancakes, until 1973. That's when it began using its now-familiar acronym.

Our IHOP restaurants are all 100% owned by independent franchise operators, and we strive to continue our business that way. We have over 1700 operating restaurants in over 13 countries and territories! When you join the IHOP family, you become part of an American icon.

Plus both restaurants were quiet and comfortable. Their atmospheres were pretty comparable. In the end, IHOP was more expensive than Denny's, but I could taste a clear difference in the quality of some of the ingredients, which ultimately gave the chain a leg up.

It was actually called Danny's. In 1953, Denny's founders Harold Butler and Richard Jezak opened up a coffee-and-doughnut shop in Lakewood, California, called Danny's — Danny's Donuts, specifically — and worked to open multiple locations over the next several years.

Dine Brands was formed as a result of the purchase. Dine Brands, which owns Fuzzy's Taco Shop in addition to Applebee's and IHOP, says these three brands have more than 3,500 locations combined over 18 countries.

Two of America's iconic chain eateries are set to combine forces — literally. The parent company of IHOP and Applebee's has announced it has begun opening dual-branded locations, combining back-of-the house cooking areas and blending front-of-the-house dining areas, though with discrete entrances.
