JetBlue adds news flights to Westchester and New York to Puerto Rico - Travel And Tour World (1)

JetBlue recently revealed plans to expand its service to Puerto Rico, announcing new flights from Westchester County Airport in Harrison and JFK Airport. In a statement issued on May 8, the airline detailed its plan to add six new flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico, including a brand-new route to Westchester County Airport. Additionally, JetBlue will introduce its premium Mint service on flights from San Juan to New York City.

The new service from San Juan to Westchester is set to commence on October 27, with daily flights. The premium Mint service, offering enhanced amenities such as food service and lie-flat seats, will start from San Juan to JFK on July 22.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) expressed his support in a news release, highlighting the significance of JetBlue’s new service to the Hudson Valley. Schumer, who has long advocated for increased service at Westchester County Airport, noted that this new route would provide convenient connections for tourists and families with loved ones on the island, while also boosting the local economy by attracting new business.

JetBlue, one of the largest airlines serving Puerto Rico, highlighted that San Juan has been among its most successful destinations since its launch in 2002. The airline also operates flights to Aguadilla and Ponce, offering connections to 18 different destinations from these three island airports. JetBlue’s president, Marty St. George, emphasized the airline’s longstanding relationship with the Puerto Rican community. He stated that JetBlue is eager to deepen its roots in the region with this expansion, strengthening its connections and presence within the vibrant community. St. George added that the airline’s history with Puerto Rico fuels its enthusiasm to increase service and continue growing alongside the Puerto Rican community.

In addition to the new flights to Puerto Rico, JetBlue announced other upcoming services. The premium Mint service will launch from New York to Vancouver on July 22 and to Phoenix on October 27. Furthermore, new flights from New York to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Bonaire are expected to be announced later this year.

This expansion is anticipated to significantly impact airline tourism by enhancing connectivity between New York and Puerto Rico. The new routes are expected to facilitate easier travel for tourists and residents, thereby promoting increased tourism and economic growth in both regions.

  • Japan Airlines and Tamagawa Aero Systems Introduce Innovative eGPU Technology at Matsuyama Airport

    &nbspFriday, May 17, 2024

JetBlue adds news flights to Westchester and New York to Puerto Rico - Travel And Tour World (8)

Tamagawa Aero Systems Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Ota-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Keisuke Nakajima, referred to as “TAS”) and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, President and Group CEO: Mitsuko Tottori, referred to as “JAL”) launched the lithium-ion battery-powered ground power unit “eGPU” at Matsuyama Airport on May 9, 2024. This marks JAL’s first adoption of this technology, aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and noise pollution.

Aircraft typically use an auxiliary power unit (APU) to supply necessary electricity and air conditioning while parked. However, APUs produce significant exhaust gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), and noise. To address environmental impacts at airports and reduce aviation fuel consumption during parking, electric power and air conditioning have been traditionally provided by diesel engine-powered ground power units (GPU).

The introduction of the “eGPU” will eliminate CO2 emissions and reduce noise levels by approximately 30% (below 65db) compared to conventional methods. This improvement is expected to enhance the working environment for operators, mitigate noise and environmental issues around airports, and support global environmental preservation.

Manufactured by ITW GSE, the “eGPU” units can continuously supply electricity for approximately 14 flights during the turnaround time of a Boeing 737-800 aircraft on a full charge and have been deployed in over 400 units worldwide.

Japan Airlines (JAL) has been investigating the use of “eGPU” units at domestic airports to support CO2 emission reduction efforts in airport facilities and vehicles, in line with the initiatives set by the Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. As part of the JAL Group, Japan Air Commuter (JAC) began using “eGPUs” at seven airports—Tanegashima, Yakushima, Kikaijima, Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabujima, and Yoron—in March 2023. Additionally, Hokkaido Air System (HAC) implemented “eGPU” operations at three airports—Sapporo Okadama, Rishiri, and Okushiri—in March 2024.

In expanding “eGPU” deployment at airports in Japan, challenges such as installing charging infrastructure and securing AC power sources for use with jet aircraft were addressed. At Matsuyama Airport, this issue was resolved by converting power plugs used for snowplow vehicle heaters, facilitating the introduction of the “eGPU”. This implementation is expected to pave the way for further deployments at other airports, leveraging the knowledge gained from this experience.

JAL and TAS remain committed to contributing to global environmental preservation and continuing efforts toward a more sustainable aviation industry.
