The Three Ps: Purpose, people and process – what do these mean in strategy consultancy, and how can you apply them to your business? (2024)

Have you ever wondered how to build the ultimate high-performance environment for your business?

As experts in strategy consultancy, our team at Wingman suggest that the “three Ps: Purpose, people and process” are crucial in enhancing and connecting commercial and cultural ways of working so that teams within organisations flourish together and deliver quality results.

So, what do I mean by the “three Ps”, what are they and how can business leaders apply this strategy to their organisations?

1.Purpose

Purpose is all about driving people within a business in the right direction. It ensures that everyone within a business understands how they fit in the bigger picture, and that they are all on the same page.

When it comes down to it, purpose is fundamentally about every single cog within a business’s machine knowing exactly what it is doing, why it is doing it and where it is headed; and most importantly, that all the cogs are connected to each other. Having a clear goal results in motivation and drive, and the process – the third “P” – suddenly becomes a lot easier to break down as businesses can work backwards from their goals and work through how they are going to achieve them.

2.People

People is arguably the most important of the three Ps because without people, businesses have no purpose and no process. The people on the ground of any business determine the ability of a workforce to deliver its strategy, no matter how sound that strategy may be.

To create a positive cultural team dynamic, businesses should work to maximise effective collaboration within and between teams, to create an overall synergistic and engaged mindset. People should feel that they can trust and rely upon one another, and that they understand the benefits that real confidence in one another can bring.

It is also vital for any business to make sure they have the right people in the right places, with the knowledge and skills required to carry out roles successfully, so it is important for businesses to give their people some serious thought; people should feel valued and focussed, as opposed to disengaged and uncollaborative.

3.Process

The final “P” comes down to process, this being the communications and frameworks that support and facilitate a high-performance environment i.e. once purpose and people are in place within a business, how efficient is the business and how effective is its overall communication and approach?

Process is about consistency and consistency is vital in creating an ethos of continuous improvement within a business. Business leaders and their people should be aware of and appreciate what is going on around them, and they should be receptive to new ideas and concepts, exercising an open mind to enhance development and growth. Growth should also be effectively measured and tracked to maximise a business’ future performance.

Business leaders can apply the three Ps to their organisations by blending learning of essential theory and knowledge with facilitated action learning; workshops, programmes and team building exercises are just a few examples of good investments a business can make to attain the three Ps, and then incorporate them into the workplace.

For a business to achieve its full potential and succeed, it should look to balance the mix of its purpose, its people and its processes. The challenge is how to apply best practise in all these areas, upskilling the workforce to implement and deliver, whilst also monitoring the impact of the interventions to ensure continued growth and success.

In my following articles, I will introduceand explainin more detail thespecificcommercial and cultural ways of working – mentioned at the beginning of this article –that come under the umbrella of the three Ps and how, when balanced correctly, thesehelpset the foundations for business productivity, efficiency and success.
